The Masks Story
Explain the plot for the story
This story is about two seventh grade girls, Tiffy and Kathy. Tiffy is the narrator. She portrays Kathy as rich from her description on how she dresses, her hair, her paintings, her sense of fashion and the people she relates with. Tiffy then goes on to describe herself and it is clear that she comes from a poorer family. She cannot afford the same kind of clothing, style and hair like Kathy. Tiffy is envious of the lifestyle that Kathy lives and in attempt to match her style, she tried to make her hair similar to Kathy's. On another occasion she tries to befriend Kathy in the library. Having no one else to talk to, Kathy approached Tiffy and for a while, Tiffy felt appreciated. Soon another girl Shelly comes into the library and Kathy leaves her to talk to Shelly. Finally Tiffy realizes that she can never relate with Kathy as she tried to greet her the next day and she assumed her.
Explain how the story is introduced
The story begins with a detailed description of a girl's hair; this description portrays a girl of class who is into details about her looks and especially her hair. The hair matches with her clothes and the lady bounces the hair in an attempt to get attention from the rest of the class. This description clearly portrays the level of sophistication and the class to which this lady belongs. The girl's clothes and shoes go further to illustrate the sophistication and the class the girl has. The description from the introduction of this story is vivid so as to capture the attention of a reader and so as the reader can visualize how Kathy looked.
Describe and state the main points
The story describes two kinds of lifestyles or social classes. On one hand there is the rich and sophisticated. The class of the rich is represented by Kathy; right from the start there is a clear description of Kathy's hair which was glossy, soft and blond. She turns her hair in an attempt to make the curls bounce and get noticed by the class mates. Her sophistication is also described by her shiny black shoes, her matching dress and white tights. From her paintings of the big white house that has a white fence her status is clearly portrayed. She also had a new pair of Nikes which Tiffy could not afford; she is also in the cheerleading team thus she is the envy of many boys and girls. Finally to show her class and sophistication, she only relates to a girl of a lower class when there are no other people from her class. She tries to strike a conversation with Tiffy in the library because there was no other girl in the library but as soon as Shelly walks in, she deserts Tiffy for her. Tiffy tries to greet her the next day but she quickly assumes her because she would not want to be associated with a girl from a poorer class.
Conclusion
The story is about the social class of the rich and sophisticated and the poor who have no class and cannot afford similar fashion like the rich. This is clearly illustrated by the description of the two girls Tiffy and Kathy. Tiffy realizes in the end that Kathy has been putting on a mask and she also realizes that she cannot relate with her. In an attempt to console herself, she sees herself as independent in comparison to Kathy who depends on her friends and without them she is nothing.
Perspective 2
Explain your new plot for the story
This story is about Tiffy a girl who is envious of another girl Kathy because she cannot sustain the kind of lifestyle that Kathy's parents are able to provide her with. Tiffy's envy is clearly depicted in the instance where she envies the paintings of Kathy, tries to make her hair similar to Kathy's and also envies her new Nikes. In attempt to feel closer to Kathy, she strikes a conversation with her in the library and tries to chat with her. She however realizes they don't have common topics they can discuss and as soon as another girl comes in, Kathy leaves her. She tries to greet her the next day but Kathy assumes her and it is at this point that Tiffy realizes that she can never be like Kathy.
Explain how how you will introduce your new story
In comparison to Kathy, Tiffy's clothes are mismatched. She wears red and green plaits, a yellow shirt and red socks. Her clothes do not match with her hair like Kathy's do. During paint time, she follows Kathy and makes sure she is next to her so that she can envy her painting; she draws a picture of her mom, the brother and herself. However her picture is ruined by blue streaks of paint. The next day filled with envy, she tries to make her hair similar to that of Kathy's but having done it herself she cannot be able to match that of Kathy and her mode of dressing makes her the laughing stock. This introduction clearly brings out the envy that Tiffy has for Kathy from the way she tries to copy with every aspect of her lifestyle.
Describe and state the main points
The main points in this new story revolve around Tiffy's envy of Kathy. Tiffy watches enviously as Kathy's mum comes to pick her from school; she tells her that they will put the drawing on the refrigerator in their white big house. In comparison, Tiffy's mum has no time to look at her painting and the house is small as compared to Kathy's. Envy is also depicted by the way Tiffy looks at Kathy's new pair of Nikes as compared to her cheap, unfashionable scats. Tiffy is also envious of the many boyfriends that Kathy has while no boy has ever asked her out. Envy also comes out when Kathy greets Tiffy at the library as she was so thrilled by the possibility of ever befriending her.
Conclusion
The story is about Tiffy's envy of a lifestyle that she cannot afford. From the beginning, she gives a vivid description of Kathy's hair; this shows how interested she was in Kathy's style. She then goes on to try out the same hair style as Kathy however this does not work out and she then tries to befriend her in the library but in the end, reality dawns on her that she can never be like Kathy. She dismissed Kathy as dependent on others and that what she has is not for real. She consoles herself that at least she is independent as compared to Kathy.
